Why No Breaks in College This Semester Is Causing Harm.

If it wasn’t obvious enough, this year, particularly the pandemic, has screwed over everyone. Now I know you’re probably tired of hearing about 2020 and Covid-19 and all the pain those two things have caused. That’s okay, I am too. But I’m not writing this to complain about those two things in particular. I’m actually just writing this to express my thoughts on what this has done to college students.

You see, at least where I’m attending college, there hasn’t been a single break. Not. One. And this has really been messing with people. Especially me. I don’t want a pity party or anything like that, but what I want you to get out of this post is why you should give college students a little more patience right now. I mean, heck, they should always be given patience and grace, but right now, we could really use some extra.

This picture I took makes me feel good. I hope it makes you feel good too.

So, what exactly is going on? Well, to start, college students are already stressed out 24/7. Yes, that’s an exaggeration, but it’s more or less accurate. According to an article by stress.org, “Eighty percent of students report feeling stressed sometimes or often, and 34 percent report having feelings of depression as reported by the Anxiety and Depression Association of America.” (Tarsitano, 2019). I can certainly attest to this, especially during my freshman and sophomore years. I’ve gotten better at handling it, but for the most part, it hasn’t gone away.

To clarify, I’m not blaming this all on college, and I’m certainly not saying my actions haven’t played a part in this. However, what I am suggesting is that the decision not to have any breaks this semester has been devastating.

Because we are living in this no-break semester currently, it’s hard to find any data to support my claim. However, time and time again when I ask my friends how they’re doing, I usually hear how they are stressed and just wish they could have at least one weekend off. Friends, I am right there with you.

This is a hard time for everyone, so please don’t think I’m trying to make our situation seem as bad or worse than other’s. I’m not. I am just simply providing you with a glimpse inside what some college students are going through currently. In fact, what sparked the idea of writing this blog was the overwhelming amount of weight I felt on my shoulders minutes prior to writing the first sentence. For me at least, writing is a form of therapy. When I really want to get a message across, I open the notes app on my computer and get to typing. Ironically enough, I’m actually avoiding doing schoolwork by writing this. So, I may have just completely rendered my case invalid.

But hey, that’s what being a college student is all about, right?

Thanks

JC
